Since 1995, the company has presented contemporary dance that explodes in movement, color and emotion. The company mixes the most edgy styles of dance and music with the classical into a kaleidoscope of energy all audiences enjoy.      Master classes and workshops continue to be an integral part of Dance Month. These innovative classes and workshop bring dance from around the world directly to the Houston dance student. X- Dancing Master Class for intermediate to advanced level dancers will be taught by Alex Arizpe.  X -Dancing is a blend between the structured, disciplined, technical world of theatrical dance and the raw, unrestricted, free form world of street and social dance.  The style of X- Dancing takes the fun and joy of free social and street dance moves and blends them with the more controlled and graceful techniques of ballet and jazz.  Improvisation, and exuberant styles of movement are foreign and can be intimidating to a technical dancer while choreography and structure stifles the raw energy and expression of a street dancer.  X- dancing has helped trained dancers to understand how to move their bodies in less restricted ways and enabled street dancers to have more sense of control, grace, and an ability to learn choreographed movements and dance within a group.  X-Dancing blends the best of both worlds without losing the essence of either.  The X- Dancing Master Class for ages 13 and older will be taught on Sunday, January 24, at 2:00-3:30 pm., The fee for the class is $8 JCC member/ $12 public. What a triple treat when the artistic leaders of Triple Focus Dance Concert Harry Guy, Urban Souls Dance Company, Marlana Walsh-Doyle, Houston Metropolitan Dance  Company and  Randall Flinn, Ad Deum Dance Company come together to give a Contemporary Master Class on Thursday, February 4, from 7:30-9:00 pm. The fee for the class is $8 JCCmember/ $12 public.

SPA’s partnership with the Jewish Community Center and IW Marks Jewelers has made the IW Marks Master Class Series possible.  Class registration and observation fees per class are $3.50 in advance and $5.00 at the door. The Mark Morris Dance Group will conduct a master class Thursday, January 14, at 7:30 pm. From its early years as Mark Morris and a group of friends, to its contemporary status as a burgeoning dance institution, the Mark Morris Dance Group has stayed true to its founder’s convictions, especially dancing with live music by some of the world’s best musicians.
